South Wales Adventurers

Taking on Fan Hir, Fan Brycheiniog and Llyn Y Fawr Circular

A few months ago I joined South Wales Adventurers and I’m genuinely really glad I did.

They organise completely free hikes in and around South Wales and it’s become such a good way to get outside more, meet like minded people and see new beautiful places. One week you can be on mountain ridges, another through woodland, around reservoirs, along the coast or finding places locally that you never knew existed. This weekend’s walk was a spicy one!! Led by Matt, took us around Fan Hir, Fan Brycheiniog and Llyn y Fan Fawr, 9.6 mile circular with 2,323 ft of elevation, reaching 2,646 ft at its highest point, The climb at the start definitely made us earn the views, but with huge open landscapes, and the lake opening up below, it was one of those routes that reminds you how lucky we are to have places like this on our doorstep.

One thing I always like about getting outside is that places feel different when there’s a story behind them. Llyn y Fan Fawr sits close to the setting of the Welsh legend of “The Lady of the Lake” - a mysterious woman said to emerge from the lake and become part of one of Wales’ best known folk stories. Whether you believe it or not, standing up there and looking across the water, you can understand why stories like that exist. What I’ve enjoyed most since joining South Wales Adventurers though is how simple it is; turning up, getting outside and spending a few hours walking through incredible places with a really good group. Thanks again for another brilliant da and looking forward to the next one.
